A Message to the spectators of the Paris Opera and Ballet
Due to the health crisis, the Paris Opera has been forced to cancel 160 performances since March 2020. The persistent uncertainties weighing on the health situation, both with regard to organising rehearsals and performances and welcoming the public, have also led us, like other opera houses, to substantially modify our autumn 2020 programme. Sadly, we are therefore obliged to cancel the following productions: the operas 7 Deaths of Maria Callas, L’Elisir d’amore, Iphigénie en Tauride and Snegourotchka, as well as the Shechter / Robbins / Pite, Cherkaoui / Eyal / Ashton and Jiří Kylián ballet evenings. We are looking into the feasibility of postponing some of these productions until the end of the season or the beginning of the 21/22 season.
The Opéra Bastille will reopen its main auditorium on 23 November with a concert version of Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle, conducted by Philippe Jordan, bringing together the musicians of the Paris Opera Orchestra and Chorus and an exceptional international cast. Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, directed by Simon Stone, initially scheduled at the Palais Garnier, Rudolf Nureyev’s ballet La Bayadère and Georges Bizet’s Carmen, directed by Calixto Bieito, will complete the 2020 end-of-year schedule.
Philippe Jordan’s concert, scheduled for 16 October at the Opéra Bastille, will be given at the Philharmonie de Paris: on the programme, Arnold Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht and Richard Strauss’ Eine Alpensinfonie.
At the Palais Garnier, where the stage will be inaccessible until the end of December due to modernisation work, from September to November and thanks to the installation of a front-of-house stage, a series of concerts (symphonies by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg concertos, concerts by the Paris Opera Chorus, recitals by the Academy, chamber music…), a programme of neo-classical and classical ballets performed by the Opera’s Étoiles and Premiers Danseurs, as well as another series of performances by the Paris Opera Ballet bringing together four creations by contemporary choreographers. The Ballet School will have the pleasure of presenting public classes on December weekends. Our artistic management is currently finalising these programmes, the details of which will be released during the summer on our website at operadeparis.fr and our mobile app.
The Academy’s schedule will begin as planned in September at the Amphitheatre and Studio Bastille.
