Message from the Paris Opera Managing Director – February 1st. Given the ongoing uncertainties delaying the prospect of reopening institutions that welcome the general public, the Paris Opera is once again having to review its artistic programme and adapt its activities.

Since establishments receiving audiences must remain closed until the end of January 2021 at the earliest, the Paris Opera is once more compelled to cancel performances scheduled over this period and to review its artistic programme for the first half of the year.

It was a first on the stage at the Bastille Opéra in Paris. Not the first performance of Rudolf Nureyev’s La Bayadère. This ballet—the last great creation of the Russian-born choreographer and director of Dance in Paris in the 1980s—has been part of the Paris Opera Ballet repertoire since 1992. Nor the fact that this Bayadère was sold and broadcast live on the internet through the new online platform “L’Opéra Chez Soi.”

If Americans cannot travel to France and Paris for the time being, if they cannot attend a performance held at the Paris Opera Bastille or Palais Garnier, they now can enjoy some of the best ballet and opera performances as well as special programs and concerts from the comfort of their living rooms.

Further to the latest government announcements setting out the conditions for the reopening of performance venues as of 15 December, the Paris Opera is delighted to inform you that its programme and the schedules for its forthcoming productions have been adapted so as to end at 9 p.m. at the latest.

From September to November 2020, a series of concerts, a programme of neo-classical and classical ballets performed by the Opera’s Étoiles and Premiers Danseurs, as well as another series of performances by the Paris Opera Ballet bringing together four creations by contemporary choreographers.

Stephane Lissner will quit his position as General Manager as of September 1, 2020. He will be succeeded by Alexander Neef on that very same date to start working on the future of the institution right away.

The Paris Opera confirmed that the two Ring Cycle planned on November 23, 2020 and December 2, 2020 will be performed by the Paris Opera Orchestra at the Bastille Opera for the 1st cycle and at Radio France for the second.

Reopening of the Palais Garnier for self-guided tours: Discover the treasures of the Palais Garnier’s public areas, a master piece of the 19th century theater art architecture.

On September 1st, 2020, Le Bristol Paris’ revolving door will turn once again. The Palace is preparing its highly-anticipated reopening with enchanting new spaces to unveil.

The stage renovation and maintenance work of the Opéra Bastille and the Palais Garnier, which were originally scheduled for the summer of 2021, to start in the Summer of 2020 instead. The lyric and choreographic programming of the Opéra national de Paris will therefore resume at the end of November 2020 in Bastille and January 2021 in Garnier.

The halls of the Palais Garnier and the Opéra Bastille are now closed until further notice; laboratories are mostly concentrating their research on a Covid19 vaccine. Yet science and art—brain and heart—remain more than ever the essence of our lives.

The Dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet created a video, edited by French film Director Cedric Klapisch, to thank the medical staff and all the people helping during the Covid-19 confinement.

While the opera houses are shut down, the Paris Opera has decided to provide and host for free a selection of free operas and ballets online. List and calendar available.

Alexander Neef has been appointed incoming General Director of the Paris Opera by the President of the Republic, acting on a proposal put forward by the Minister of Culture, Franck Riester.
